calendars won't sync ipod touch

I can't get all my calendars in ical to sync to my ipod touch. I have a ipod touch 5 and this problem started when I upgraded it to ios 9.2.1. I tried resetting my ipod, and overwriting all the information on my ipod with the computer's calendar information, but it does nothing.

I'm running El Capitan 10.11.3

iPod touch (5th generation), iOS 9.2.1

Are both devices using the same iCloud ID and is calendars turned on in the iCloud settings/preferences?

no. the last time I set up icloud on my computer, it went ahead and deleted EVERYTHING. so no.

yea. i've tried that multiple times before posting to this. I guess apple just like making broken products now.
